Objectives
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Explain different points of view of the Brown v. Board of Education decision.
- Understand why these different points of view existed.
Materials
Handout A: Excerpts from Newspaper Editorials — May 18, 1954
Activity
- Teachers may choose to ask the following questions prior to distributing
the handout:
- How is an editorial different from other pages in a newspaper?
- What is the purpose of an editorial?
- In 1954, what forms of media delivered news to Americans?
- What forms of media deliver news to Americans today?
- Do newspaper editorials have greater or less influence today?
- Distribute Handout A and allow time for students to complete handout.
- Class discussion of the material contained in the handout.

Students will understand that important ideas, social and cultural values, beliefs and traditions from New York State and United States history illustrate the connections and interactions of people and events across time and from a variety of perspectives.
Students will identify cultural characteristics of different regions and people.
Format
This lesson is in constructed response question format which is used in New York State Assessments.
